Some interesting facts

Chips

The origins of the potato chip or, as it is known to the English, the crisp, can allegedly be traced back to mid-19th century USA. A story tells of a customer who returned his fried potatoes to the kitchen because they weren’t crunchy enough. The chef therefore sliced the potatoes so thinly that the man wouldn’t be able to eat them with a fork. Surpris¬ingly enough, the customer was thrilled and the restaurant became famous for its thin potato chips. The invention of a mechanical potato peeler in 1920 provided grounds for industrial-scale expansion, as well as the coming of age of this the world’s most popular snack

Peanuts

Although their history is longer, salted peanuts only became a com¬mercially produced snack during the late-19th century, upon a vast increase in peanut production facilitated by a number of inventions. This erstwhile poor-mans food, and more often cattle fodder, became a staple nutriment during the American Civil War, following which freshly roasted peanuts were vended on street corners as well as munched at sports competitions and circus shows all over the country.

Pistachio

The pistachio was an everyday nutriment at least six thousand years ago. The ancient Persians enriched their diet with them, and there are also records of the pistachio nut in the Old Testament as well as legend surrounding their being grown in the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.

Popcorn

Popcorn also enjoys a long and amazing history. Some believe that four thousand years ago ‘popping’ was actually the original mode of preparation of this hard seed!
